Bubsie: The First Car to Drive Around Australia (1925 True Story)

06 Nov 2025

In 1925, two young blokes borrowed a tiny Citroën with less power than a lawnmower… and drove it 17,000km around Australia. This is the incredible true story of “Bubsie,” the first car to lap the continent.

When 21-year-olds Nevill Westwood and Greg Davies left Perth for a simple trip to Darwin, they had no maps, almost no fuel stops, and nothing but rough tracks ahead of them. But their journey quickly turned into a 148-day race to become the first to circumnavigate Australia, against two faster cars that set out after them.

After months of breakdowns, bogs, dust, deserts and unexpected help from locals across the country, Bubsie rolled back into Perth to nationwide applause. One motoring magazine called their effort “one of the most praiseworthy performances in the motoring history of the world.”

Author David Riley retraced the original route, dug through archives, and spoke with descendants to bring this remarkable adventure back to life. Today, the original Bubsie is housed at the National Museum of Australia as a vehicle of national significance.

‘Bubsie and the Boys’ book is now released, a delightful, true story of courage, mateship and Aussie grit at a remarkable moment in history.
